The detritus you can find in these no-where spaces indicate such extremes, such drama, they’re horny, sad, yet almost spiritual in their gradation between the natural and urban worlds. Inspiring a yearning to be reborn, to live a feral and free existence, uncivilised, but still within 15mins from the nearest Tesco Express.
An expression of disgust; an antisocial act of frustration & rebellion against societal dictates of decorum; expelling of phlegm; a sexual swap of fluids in passion and/or dominance or play.
Worcestershire Breast Unit is a charity set up to support all patients diagnosed with breast cancer in Worcestershire. It was set up by my talented, overachieving, big bro, who is the resident consultant breast surgeon. The unit’s aim is to provide practical and emotional support to the people of Worcestershire with their breast care needs, working closely with the NHS specialist breast care team to provide the best possible care in the best possible environment.
This ink & pencil artwork was produced for a fundraising auction for the unit.
Yew is a fascinating plant, with many medicinal uses but particularly being very effective for the treatment of breast cancer in the form of Paclitaxel (Taxol). Butterflies are a symbol associated with going through cancer, representative of change and readjustment.

I started drawing dead flies towards the end of my mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s. I had found her leaving a plate of sugared water out on the kitchen side, on enquiring why she stated that it was for the fly trapped indoors that she worried would die, it being winter. This action speaks a lot about her kind and considerate nature, and the image of this sticks with me still and helped me process her degeneration and loss. Later the image of the dead fly came to associated with my own mortality, my queerness and my failures. The slight shift towards a more colourful, expressive representation I feel is linked to where I am now and the direction I feel I am growing towards.
I don’t just draw dead flies (in fact I thought I was over the subject) but drawing them does help me when there are interior struggles I need to address.
Mostly working in pen and ink I have also experimented with painting, etching and screen printing when exploring the subject matter.
